YATTON RFC

18th September 2005

Yatton 3rd’s  27  Southmead  0

Playing on a narrow pitch and with uncontested scrums the Yatton potential was held well by Southmead in the early stages, helped by Southmead’s ability to win the majority of line out ball.

The stalemate was broken after a penalty close to the Southmead line when skipper Andy Williams screwed his way over the line. Stef Vaughn added the conversion, but this was the only score of the evenly contested first half.

Youth and maturity combined well in the second half when young Aaron Sumner made a good run for veteran Stef Vaughn to take his pass and use his strength and weight to power over for a try. Vaughn increased the lead again with a well-kicked penalty shortly after.

Youth and maturity combined yet again in a move when Adam Noble kicked ahead with Darren Pugh surprising the opposition and spectators with the speed of his follow up to take the ball on the bounce and sprint 30 meters to score unopposed. Stef Vaughn provided extra points.

Yatton were well into attacking mode at this stage, but being thwarted by a stubborn Southmead defence which finally succumbed just before the whistle when Adam Noble combined one more time with Darren Pugh to dive over for the final try.

This interesting mixture of young and veteran players, in a side much changed from the previous week, augurs well to achieve another notable season for Yatton 3rd’s
