‘Fit Fijians force win ’

The four London based South Sea Islanders in the recently relegated, but comparatively wealthy Taunton side certainly made the home side look a class act in parts.

Fly half Jason Dick opened the scoring with a penalty conversion for Taunton after 7 minutes.

Yattons forwards continued to show well and were unlucky that their only reward was Dave Keatings penalty on the quarter to level the scores

The restart faulter for Yatton and Tauntons quick penalty fed the backline with classic angles to give wing Ben Rudkin an easy try.

Minutes later the speed of opposite wing Warren Lewis was gifted a try as Yattons kick  for touch fell short in Tauntons 22 with Yattons defensive wing not fully covered. Dick converted.

For the 2nd Quarter Yattons pack more than match the opposition, taking one against the head. Yattons play was varied and more attractive but their main concern was to stop the two Fijian centres from busting through.

Moments before the break in a sudden torrential downpour Dick intercepted and touchdown in the corner from the halfway. Taunton turning around at 20-3

Yatton now turned to face the wind and pressurised Taunton for most of the third period but failed to score loosing the ball in a tackle yards from the opposition tryline only to see it scooped up by Fijian Tubes Naulivou and touched down by their own corner flag. Dick again converted. At 65 minutes a Taunton player was binned for preventing quick penalties.

Yattons pack began to dominate Chris Harris grounded the ball from a penalty drive and Keating converted.

But with 10 minutes to go Dick landed a wind assisted penalty and although Yattons front three had struck two more times against the head it was Rudkin again set free down the wing against tired Yatton legs who finished off in injury time. Based on this performance together with more fitness Yattons winning ways will surely return against the more bread and butter sides of their League.

This Saturday Yatton 1st XV are in the Intermediate Cup away to Cleeve.
