YATTON RFC

24 September 2005

                                    Yatton 3rd’s  10  Clifton Rats  27

This was a disappointing result for Yatton against a side they could have beaten, but on the day the defiant defence of the visitors allied with their superior handling and running skills made them the deserved victors.

Playing uncontested scrums and winning a good share of lineout, Yatton won enough initial phase ball, but were turned over too many times as the forwards were not competing in numbers. After sustained attacks, which in the large part were defended stoutly by Yatton, the only try of the first half went to Clifton.

Yatton restarted playing down the slope confident that they could overcome the deficit, bur a Clifton break from the back row was poorly defended and they were gifted their second try.

Yatton still had the initiative in spite of the score, and the forwards combined well to drive form a short penalty for Jonathan Crew to steal the touchdown.

However it was not Yatton’s day because poor handling and too much individual play denied them further scores, although on several occasions they were close to the Clifton line.

Clifton went further ahead after a good handling move but Yatton responded with a try from John Parsons after the ball was moved quickly along the line from a short penalty.

More of this type of play would have achieved a better result for Yatton. In the dying moments Yatton gifted another try to Clifton from and error behind the scrum, which was chased and cleverly carried over.

Yatton 3rd’s have now experienced their first loss of the season and will rue their overall performance against a determined Clifton side.

Tries: Jonathan Crew, John Parsons
