Yatton wake up Taunton.

Last Saturday it was a depleted Yatton 1st XV which travelled down to second in the league Taunton, who were also missing their Fijian No 8. The weather was very cold but dry and the home side faced a stiff breeze during the first half.

Taunton was a penalty conversion up at the first 3 minutes and Yatton’s opportunity 5 minutes later flew wide.

It was Taunton’s class act South sea Islander Fullback who weaved his way through at pace to land the first try beneath the posts at the end of the first quarter.

Ten minutes later a driving maul from the home side added another try and conversion with a penalty conversion bring 20-0 in favour of Taunton at halftime.

But despite now having a slight wind advantage the county seat home side failed to make any further headway during the third quarter as the visiting village side showed they were not in the habit of rolling over.

At sixty minutes series of pick and drives took Yatton to the opposition’s try line where resistance to a try was helped by the defence testing the offside rule and a series of sideways rucks and mauls occurred. Eventually Yatton were adjudged to have knocked on but in the resultant scrum the visitors front three secured the second win of the afternoon against the head. Centre Mike Harris receiving the pass to crash through alongside the post, presenting Tony Hill with an easy conversion.

Minutes later Taunton recovered the difference by breaking through at pace and converting.

Hill collected another penalty for the visitors with ten minutes to go but just before the 80 minutes were up Taunton finished off a lineout take and drive to put the result well beyond Yatton’s reach.

During time added however it was Yatton who were encamped again in the opposition’s 22 when Nic Spellissy’s interception was chased down and the home side were forced into frantic defence.

This Saturday Yatton’s 1st XV face another tough match when they entertain Barnstaple who sit at 3rd in the League. Kick-off 2-30pm preceded by the ever popular Vice Presidents’ hot main course and cheese & biscuits luncheon.
