ST IVES 1st XV 28 YATTON 1st XV 10

YATTON travelled to Cornwall to play St Ives for the first time.

The sides seemed evenly matched for the first 30 minutes and had equal possession, but Yatton were caught offside and a penalty from Grant Thirlby put the home side ahead.

Within two minutes, the visiting full-back, Tony Hill, kicked the ball ahead and pressure from the Yatton pack forced the penalty, with the St Ives forwards going over the top. John Shorney kicked the points.

St Ives converted two more penalties and, in the 50th minute of the first half, the hosts broke through Yatton's defence when quick ball from the base of the scrum was taken over by John Navin.

A mistake in the backs then gave New Zealander Ross Callagan the interception to score under the posts.

Yatton still continued to put pressure on the home side and, from a lineout, the forwards took the ball forward and Chris Harris carried it over the line. John Shorney converted.

Ryan Bishop scored the final try for St Ives, the home side proving too strong.

Yatton will have a chance for revenge when they host St Ives in the EDF Energy Intermediate Cup on Saturday, October 18.

On Saturday, Yatton 1st XV play St Mary's Old Boys, the seconds visit Stothert & Pitt, while the thirds host Walcot.
