With four strong players missing from the pack, Yatton 1st XV knew that their league fixture on the promenade at Torquay was going to be tough despite the glorious sunshine.
For the first quarter, 4th in the league Torquay Athletic were denied points by their own over confidence, over kicking and Yattons dogged defence.
Yattons opportunity of getting first on the scoreboard, from a penalty conversion, was denied when the ball twice fell off the ‘tower kicking tee’ in a pitch full of mud patches. The referee signalled time up and awarded a scrum to the opposition.
10 minutes later there was a flare up involving several players off the ball and well away from play.
During first half injury time the Tics backline broke thro’ from a solid 5 yard scrum and converted.
For the third quarter Yatton struggled facing the strong setting sun making occasional excursions over the halfway line. Advantages were frequently awarded as an immediate whistle for a scrum, the set piece that Yatton were already struggling in so there was little advantage.
Going into the fourth quarter Yattons full back and the Tic’s No 4 were both yellow carded with some others getting off lightly or unseen.
The homesides advantage of being able to set up really effective rolling mauls against tired legs during the last quarter gave them solid platforms for three easy tries, two being converted.
But Yattons sheer guts and determination saw them camped on the homesides tryline, for the last minutes of stoppage time, after the backs broke from their own 22 and were only stopped from crossing over by taking the wrong option in the final few paces.
This Saturday the visitors to Yatton are St Marys OB who have crept to within one win behind Yatton in the relegation zone – and St Marys have a game in hand.
Kick-off 2.30 pm
