‘Yatton miss opportunity’.
As it turned out last Saturday, Yatton missed the opportunity to move to within one league win of local rivals Clevedon. Clevedon were defeated away against Newton Abbot and Yatton failed to capitalise on their early in the season away win against Barton Hill loosing by the narrowest off margins at home. Weston Hornets beat the other basement club St Mary’s and are now level in the league with Yatton. So its all ‘warming up nicely’ for the second half of the season ‘run in’.
Barton Hill knew their game plan and with their heavy weight pack stuck at it.
Yatton’s seeming lack of urgency in the first half when they had advantage of the slight slope cost them dear – they appeared to have the lethargy of still travelling back from their successful league game and long weekend in deepest Cornwall on the previous Saturday.
Things started bright enough for the home side with a Tony hill penalty after only three minutes, but they failed to take advantage of a gifted five metre scrum from Barts unforced defensive error at 15 minutes.
The game became niggly for the next 20 minutes and throughout as both sides of forwards sized each other up. Minutes before half time Barts elected a lineout when their wingers break was adjudged stopped buy a high tackle.
Yatton having driven back Barts lineout maul then immediately lost against the head in the scrum. Captain Ross Baker scampered over for Barts to make the halftime score line three points to five.
With their tails up and the slope now in their favour Barts pinned Yatton in their half for the first ten minutes but eventually Yatton worked their way up the touchline and drove prop Dan Miles over to ground the ball near the posts. Hill converted.
At 60 minutes Barts No 8 was yellow carded but Yatton still couldn’t achieve points for their hard work. In fact desperate defence by Yatton and Barts wrong options were all that stopped the visitors from increasing their tally of points.
With only stoppage time to go Barts tenacity resulted in a classic across the pitch attack as Baker evaded tackles to touchdown right in the corner. Matt Richards speculative conversion attempt was on target and gave the visitors the lead by two points.
Yatton’s injury time urgency and endeavour were far too late and brought no reward.
