Camborne  vs      Yatton

Yatton Scorers     - Tries M Harris 2, Conv T Hill Pen T Hill .

Yatton slot away their first double in new division.

50 supporters joined in the novelty of following Yatton’s 1st XV down to Camborne for their first ever league match away against a Cornish side. As the ‘Jethro joke’ says ‘the train don’t stop at Camborne on a Saturday’ but that didn’t matter because they went by coach and stayed ‘en mass’ overnight after the match. Camborne lease out their ground, when the are not using it, to the National One side Cornish Pirates, so the stands and seating facilities are very impressive but that didn’t help the home side.

On a firm surface Yatton had the advantage of the stiff wind in the first half and pinned the homeside into their 22 for the first ten minutes.

Five minutes later fullback Tony Hill fired through a penalty conversion from well outside the 22. Within seconds from a driving maul on the halfway line Darren Stone and Mike Harris were able inter-pass and to carve through for Stone to unselfishly give the try scoring final pass. Hill’s conversion bounced over off the upright, so the omens looked good at that stage.

Camborne’s only opportunity was a penalty which flew wide but there were signs of good individual play.

Five minutes before halftime Tony Hill’s catch of an attempted clearance and run at pace from his own 22 gave Mike Harris the chance to sell a dummy into the corner.

On forty minutes Yatton had just been awarded the scrum put in on the oppositions tryline.

Five minutes into the second half Camborne’s David Mankee opened with a penalty conversion as his team upped the tempo in the scrums.

For the next quarter of an hour Yatton were caught occasionally ragged as they tried to work out of the awkward slope in the corner and against the wind.

At 75 minutes a driving maul for Camborne resulted in a pile of bodies grounding the ball but the conversion attempt fell short. As the wind picked up Camborne felt they sensed a victory or a least a draw but the excitement caused them unforced errors and Yatton remained solid.

This Saturday Yatton’s 1st XV are at home against old adversaries Barton Hill, having achieved a narrow victory away earlier in the season time. Kick-off 2-30pm preceded by the the ever growing Vice Presidents’ hot main course and cheese & biscuits luncheon.
