Not enough sparkle in Yatton.
Having ‘enticed’ some players to join their team and travel in a vane attempt to secure a win against Yatton in the first leg of the season’s league encounter, Newton Abbot upped the stakes even more and obtained the services of two players from Launceston the home of the National first division team Cornish All Blacks for this return match on their home, surprisingly careworn, ground. The Cornish All Blacks play at a level which is four divisions above Yatton and Newton Abbot. Newton Abbots own published match report says that the players have both arrived until ‘further notice from Launceston’.
The result of this home win
for
Visitors Yatton lacked sparkle in only a few key areas but it made the difference on the dry but bitterly cold overcast afternoon.
The home side effectively pinned Yatton into their own half until the turnaround but surprisingly Yatton’s defence restricted them to only a converted try and a penalty conversion at the end of the first quarter. Minutes after Yatton’s opportunity to get on the scoreboard and retrieve some points from normally a simple penalty conversion flew wide, leaving the score at 10-0.
During the first ten minutes of the second half the All Whites of Newton Abbot landed another penalty conversion and were forced out into the corner for their last try of the game.
Yatton’s pack then began applying pressure of their own achieving strikes against the head at scrums and punching holes into the All Whites not so confident lines. This gave some comfort to the relatively large crowd of travelling supporters but to be fair the home side slowed it down and held out without conceding any points, even though they had a flanker yellow carded just after 50 minutes.
