‘Yatton warm up for Clevedon clash’.
Yatton won their first home game of the season to give a good send-off to ex-captain Dave Keating, who had announced this as his retirement match at age 37 having always played for Yatton since age 7, with appearances for Somerset County in his later years.
Flyhalf Keating took advantage of Yatton’s forward drive within the first two minutes to touch down. Tony Hill converted.
But Camborne, initially having been taken unaware, gave Yatton something to think about for the remainder of the quarter, their reward being a penalty conversion.
Minutes later Keating slipped a timed pass to flanker Nic Spellissy at pace. Fullback Hill again converted the try. Within seconds fullback Joe Parma landed another penalty for his Cornish side.
However in the second quarter centre Darren Stone collected a crash ball to cross over and Mike Harris broke through from the centre to touchdown.
Spirited Camborne’s first try came from a pushover seconds before halftime when hooker Nathan Curnow grounded the ball, but the scoreline of 28-11 was looking ominous for the long distance travellers.
With two penalty conversions from Hill within the first ten minutes after the turn-around, followed by three consecutive tries from scrumhalf Nick Garnham, two being converted, with much thanks to the solid work of Yatton’s forwards, the end result was a forgone conclusion.
Camborne’s sheer doggedness
right to the end finished with a try for centre Bob Ley,
converted by
But it was Glen Jones who had the last say for the homeside when he collected spilt ball in open play to race into the corner for his fourth try with minutes to go.
This Saturday Yatton travel all of 2/3
miles to compete against Clevedon. The two sides
never having played in the same division since League games began. Both sides
are roughly mid-table with Clevedon having one win
more than Yatton. Kick-off 2.30pm
