Top Team Yatton set pace
Gloucester Old Boys fighting relegation gave league leaders Yatton a hard battle. But the ‘on a roll’ visitors were not intimidated by the Old Boys giant players in the pack or their No 10 who must be the biggest in the league.
The Old Boys did test Yatton several times well within their 22 but it was those defensive skills and mobility which emphatically captured the win.
From a lineout at the home side’s 22 GT Walters try and conversion by Dave Keating put Yatton on the board after four minutes. Keating adding a penalty minutes later.
But at the end of the first quarter Steve Brown’s try struck back for the Old Boys.
Five minutes later mercurial wing Phil Morgan was given space by Matt Johnson’s winning of the ball. Morgan evading two tackles from just inside the halfway line as he crossed over for Yatton.
With minutes to go before half-time Yatton were given what appeared to be a bitter blow when two players were yellow carded within seconds of each other in desperate defence.
But Houdini like Yatton broke out and Nic Garnham’s try in first half injury time forged Yatton further ahead on 5-20.
Keating never faltered in taking the two penalty opportunities offered during the first 15 minutes of the second half.
On the hour the Old Boys constant ramming by the forwards did give some reward when centre Ollie Hutchinson scampered through to touchdown. Andy Brody doing well to convert from out wide.
Yatton’s display was a concerted team effort being rounded of by centre Mike Harris’s break through the middle after Nic Spellissy presented the ball, Harris selling dummies and diving between the posts. Keating converted with four minutes to go.
As in the above match, Leaders Yatton are
setting the pace they have three more league games to go, one of which is
against Barton Hill. Barton Hill are four points behind and have two games in
hand while Old Centralians are three games behind and
six points away from the League Leaders.
