MATCH REPORT
OLD CENTRALIANS v YATTON –
Yatton won the toss and elected to play up the slope. They struggled to get out of their 22 for 20 minutes, until perversely, they were reduced to 14 men with hooker Matt Johnson being yellow carded for killing the ball. Despite this and being unable to understand some of the referee’s decisions they were only 6 - 0 down, courtesy of Craig Anderson.
Yatton now started to assert themselves and 5 minutes later Nick Garnham scored out wide following a break from a scrum. 6 - 5.
Old Centralians, however, knew how to play the slope and kicked astutely throughout the game. One such kick led to Mick Mumford going over in the corner after 33 minutes to take OC’s into half time with a 11 - 5 lead.
In the second half Yatton began positively and following a series of drives Nick Spellissy crashed over to bring them back into the game at 11 - 10.
A team is never as weak as when it has just scored and so it proved as 5 minutes later OC’s forced a break through the middle to touch down under the posts through Pete Willetts. 18 - 10.
Again, in this ebb and flow game, Yatton responded with a flowing move through the entire back division which ended when right wing Glen Jones cut back inside the full back to score. 18 - 15.
Unfortunately Yatton could not capitalise on
further pressure and a final penalty by
The game was notable for the recall of veteran fly half Justin Andrews and evergreen prop John Mackay as well as the league debut for the final few minutes of Colt back row player James Grimes.
Next week we are at home to Keynsham in a match sponsored by H.Williams and sons.
