Yatton retain top spot

Yatton stay as No 1 in the Western Counties North division with this away victory.

After soggy trench warfare during the last few months it was good for Yatton to be able to visit the Forest of Dean area and play on a hill top firm pitch.

At the end of the first ten minutes, Berry hill had a player sin-binned, having gone ahead through a penalty and Yatton levelled the score.

Ten minutes later, from a line-out on the 22, Phil Morgan broke for Nick Spellissey to finish beneath the posts, Dave Keating converted. Berry retrieved three points from a penalty minutes later.

Seconds before half time from a scrum at halfway, No 8 and Captain Chris Harris broke through and supporting scrum-half Nick Garnham touched down, again beneath the posts, with Keating adding the extras.

An injury-time gifted penalty for Berry made the score 9-17 at half-time.

In the 55th minute, Yatton’s hooker was sin-binned and they again conceded another penalty.

There was then uncontested scrums for ten minutes because the visitors had already used their front row replacement for injury.

If Berry’s missed penalty had been successful later in the match it would have brought the home side within two points.

But in the 70th minute, Yatton centre Rhys Davies’s try beneath the posts, selling a dummy after good hands in the three quarter line, proved to be the final score.

A good performance away against a side in the lower half of the division, but spoiled by some indiscipline.

This Saturday old rivals Thornbury do battle at Yatton. Thornbury are 4th in the division and have two games in hand. Kick-off 2.30pm preceded by the usual two courses Vice Presidents luncheon.
