1st XV do it for Harris

Yatton’s 1st XV Head Coach John Harris played all his rugby for North Bristol and holds their record for the most tries and for playing 1,031 games for them. His sons, Captain Chris Harris and outside centre Mike, have always played for Yatton having progressed through the juniors – so this was not just another league match.

North Bristol kicked off with the strong wind. Their heavier pack pinned the visitors within their own 22 for most of the first quarter but without reward. Some apparent effectiveness in the scrum being lost, when the Referee warned for engaging late and boring down.

It was a break by No8 Chris Harris which allowed scrum half Nic Garnham space and room to run half the pitch touching down for Yatton.

But North were able to use the wind and Martin Lambourne slotted away three penalties within the last 10 minutes of the first half and lengthy injury time, putting the home side on 9-5 at the break.

At 45 minutes a quick tap penalty and then break by Chris Harris was again finished by Garnham for Tom Jackson to convert.

10 minutes later a classic try through Gareth GT Walters to Nic Spellissy led to Sam Osborne having an easy conversion.

In the final quarter battling North began to tire and league leaders Yatton upped the tempo.

Hooker Matt Johnson grounded under the posts, seconds after Mike Harris’s powerful run enabled him to touchdown. Minutes later, mobility for Yatton saw Lee Millard flick a pass to fullback Alan Scott Walters who cantered in and around the deadball area.

In the 80th minute, Mike Harris put away supporting Garnham. Osborne converting all of the last five tries.

As one of the several dozen travelling supporters said, after this emphatic Yatton display, ‘the Boys done good for Dad’

This Saturday Yatton 1st XV progress in the next round of the EDF Senior Vase playing Western Counties side Credition at North End, Yatton.

Supporters are reminded that this is a 2-00 pm Kick Off and ‘knock-out’ match.
