This EDF Senior Vase excursion into Western Counties (South) territory gave travelling Yatton the chance to try out a few new faces in the latter stages of the game.

Defences for both teams held firm for the first quarter with the hard Withy pack giving Yatton something to think about.

Centre Adam Pearce was first on the board for the homeside as their inevitable five yard lineout catch and drive gave him space to finish off and convert.

Midfield no quarter tackling and rucks resulted in Sam Osborne converting a penalty, the result of a Withy centre being yellow carded at 35 minutes.

Minutes later scrum half Nic Garnham sold a midfield dummy and finished well supported under the posts. Giving Yatton the slender lead of 7-10 at half time.

At 55 minutes another homeside player was sin binned but it was Withycombe who regained the lead through a momentary error at the back of a five yard scrum when Yatton had won the ball against the head. Fly half Graham May pounced on the ball and Pearce converted.

For the next 20 minutes the delicate balance swung slightly in Yattons favour. Centre Mike Harris intercepted in midfield, grounded the ball and Osborne collected the extras.

With 5 minutes to go solid ball from the pack saw good angles of attack on the way to the safe hands of Capt ‘for the day’ Alan Scott Walters, who was grinning like a Cheshire Cat as he ran in the deadball area to make sure of an easy conversion.

But to be fair to Withycombe it was only the final whistle which made them give up.

This Saturday, back to the regular League programme, Yatton 1st XV face the stiff opposition of Gordon League. The ever popular Vice Presidents Luncheon precedes the 2.30 pm kick-off, when Yatton are expected to be wearing this seasons new ‘state of the art team’ strip.
