Whitehall were keen for the points from a win and to avenge their away defeat against Yatton earlier in the season.

Apparently, because of other cancelled matches, this game had three qualified referees adjudicating, so there was plenty of opportunity for consultation.

For the first quarter of an hour, it looked as though Yatton’s open play would produce results, but their attacks were made to falter and Whitehall had done their homework.

A Yatton defensive error gave Whitehall the chance of a line-out drive, Simon Bishop grounded the ball and Dane Weaver converted, and Whitehall were on the scoreboard after 15 minutes.

As Whitehall’s play in the front eight was allowed to develop, the home side edged further in front from two Weaver penalties before half-time.

Uncompromising play in rucks and mauls caused a player from each side to be yellow-carded after the first five minutes of the second half.

Yatton’s consolation was a Sam Osborne penalty.

But 10 minutes later, Whitehall’s Dave Calloway collected the bounce from a chip over in attack and, with confidence flowing, Weaver was able to cut through Yatton’s stretched defence on 70 minutes to put the outcome beyond doubt.

Nick Garnham’s individual break from the halfway line for Yatton minutes later had signs of a better game plan, but it was too late.

Whitehall’s emphatic win was rounded off with the award of a penalty try and a Weaver conversion on the final whistle.
