Avonmouth were out to put the double over Yatton, having defeated them at home earlier in the season.

But how they now find themselves bottom of the league defies logic on their display in this match.

As Avonmouth committed basic errors during the first ten minutes, Yatton went ahead by three penalty conversions.

Avonmouth’s strength lay in their line-outs and power in the pack which gave Grant Britton the chance to ground the ball from a pushover at the end of the first quarter.

Minutes later Mike Harris broke on the wing and gave following up Gareth Walters the chance to finish off.

Ten minutes later Tom Moore struck back for Avonmouth on the blind side from a five yard scrum.

Seconds before half time Yattons’ forwards combined an open play from a Matt Johnson break, Russ Hancock slipped to Chris Harris and Sam Osborne converted bringing Yatton to 21-10.

But Avonmouth needed a win and within the third quarter mercurial centre Charl Coetzer struck twice receiving the ball at pace after Avonmouth pack had sucked in the opposition.

Chris Rhodes conversion put Avonmouth in front at a slender 21-22.

Stung into action Yatton reacted to home supporters encouragement and No 8 Ian Spiller eventually received the ball from open play to bulldoze for the line.

Gutsy Avonmouth attacks resulted in desperation tactics for Yatton who had a player sent to the bin. But the home side weathered their visitor’s choice to elect for line-outs and Osborne’s final penalty gave Yatton a seven point margin at the whistle.

This Saturday Yatton 1st XV are on League duty away against Whitehall who are fighting relegation.
