Apparently having decided that there was unlikely to be any cup-run silverware from this season in the Trophy Cabinet Yatton were able to use this Bristol Combination Cup tie as an opportunity to try out and re-position players.
Yatton’s 10 man game was easily a match for their opposition from one league above but it was the pace of Saint Marys wings and especially the South African full back Franco Van Der Merwe which made the one significant difference.
Saint Marys game plan was to use pace and within four minutes Franco’s first try was converted. At 10 minutes Saints penalty conversion was erased seconds later by Sam Osborne for Yatton.
Franco struck again at 25 minutes but was forced well into the corner. Again seconds after the re-start Osborne’s penalty kept Yatton in contention.
Franco’s first half hat-trick came deep in injury time with a conversion bringing the score to 22-6.
As the cold weather conditions became more gloomy and illumination from the flood lights spasmodic Yatton can count themselves unlucky not to get additional points from their pack but Saints know how to interrupt play and spoil good ball, while their French hooker also proved to be a handful.
Despite try saving tackles by Yatton’s defence, the speed of Franco and the breeze resulted in two more converted tries, one for himself and one laid on for his follow up winger.
This Saturday Yatton 1st XV get the
opportunity to try out a few more changes when they travel away in the league
to undefeated
