Definitely a game of two halves and identical scoring.

Yatton, in front of a large crowd, were off to a dream start as Sam Osborne landed two penalty conversions from the halfway line within the first 6 minutes.

10 mins later Osborne converted his third penalty opportunity and with Thornbury committing basic errors it was Yatton all the way.

But the visitors had the edge in the scrums and seemed to test lineout rules to the limit with late arrivals ‘en mass’ amid shouting and waving of arms.

Icing on the cake came for Yatton in the first half injury time as Osborne pounced on the bouncing ball under the posts, which had resulted from the oppositions sloppy defensive pass in open play. He converted the try to put the homeside on 16-0 at the change of ends.

Just three minutes into the second half Osbornes penalty edged Yatton further in front but Thornburys heavy front five were not tiring and within seconds Simon Weaver put his side on the board for the first time with a penalty.

With Yattons adventures into the visitors half achieving no further points the penalty count for Thornbury gradually gave them confidence.

Weaver, like Osborne before him, achieved a 100% count with three more penalties at 65 mins meaning that his side only needed a try and conversion to level the scores.

As players and supporters from both sides expressed their feelings Thornbury’s final chance came in the dying seconds of added time.

A forced lineout take and drive was halted by the homeside but the overlap on the wing allowed Ollie Fleming to cross over and Weavers final kick under the intense pressure sailed between the posts. Giving each side one try and conversion plus 4 penalty conversions with a 100% kicking rate.

This Saturday Yatton 1st XV travel to North Bristol, who are currently second from the bottom, in the League table. No doubt the travellers will not want to repeat their last away encounter against a second from the bottom team.
