It appeared that it was Yatton’s plan to avoid the three defeats suffered at the hands of Whitehall last season.

Whitehall’s out-of-hand kicking especially let them down, although their lineout play, pick-and-drive routine and battling for the whole game made them worthy opposition.

Perhaps the fact that it was going to be Yattons’ day was signalled within the first two minutes.

Number eight Ian Spiller broke through from the scrum and Matt Johnson collected the ball to see a clear path to the try line from the oppositions 22. Sam Osborne converted.

For the next quarter Whitehall pinned Yatton down in their own 22, but Yatton’s breakaway resulted in a penalty and players then became tetchy until 40 minutes when a player from each side was yellow carded.

Nick Garnham’s try in the remaining seconds of seven minutes of stoppage time brought the scoreline to 15-0.

Within one minute of the second half start Yatton were again on the board with a penalty.

As the same patterned shirts and similar colours seemed to cause momentary confusion, Whitehall centre Rob Ford was gifted an interception unopposed between Yatton’s back line. Jason Tomlin converted.

Minutes after that little hiccup, it was more or less Yatton all the way. Four tries were run in during the next 20 minutes.

Captain Chris Harris’s try was followed by brother Mike’s theatrical finish to his own touchdown.

Both Yatton’s wings then had the opportunity to cut in. Phil Morgan’s well celebrated try was followed by Chris Brean weaving through to touch down. Osborne converted three out of the last four tries.

This Saturday for Yatton’s 1st XV league fixture they travel all the way to recently promoted Avonmouth Old Boys, to be pitted against a prevoius teammate and player coach.
