‘Drybrook muddies Yatton’

Yatton took a lesson in lineout and mauling for a major part of this Western Counties (North) game.

With large patches of deep mud and mostly constant drizzle, Drybrook were the more determined and had a game more suited to the conditions.

During the first quarter Yatton were slow to start but resisted Drybrooks physical presence. The only highlight was what seemed a certain try from a 5-yard scrum for Drybrook resulted in a breakaway chance for Yatton. Unfortunately the ball was fly-hack just beyond the homesides deadball line.

Inevitably Drybrook capitalised on decisions that allowed instant wheeling in scrums and after prolonged pressure at the visitors line they grounded the ball from a maul. The conversion giving them a 7-0 lead at halftime.

Minutes into the second half Drybrook broke from the base of another 5-yard scrum to dive over.

But Yatton were now recovering from their long journey into the Forest of Dean and occasionally using instant wheeling themselves. It was now Drybrooks turn to hold out in defence.

Finally at 70 minutes Yatton were on the score board thanks to scrum half Nic Garnham breaking from a scrum and running behind the posts to give an easy conversion to Sam Osborne.

But, deservedly, relegation fighting Drybrook picked up the final points from a second penalty opportunity within minutes before the final whistle.

This weekend Yatton 1st XV travel for the Somerset Cup on SUNDAY, Kick-off 2-00pm away against Tor who are top of their league and likely to join their visitors in Western Counties (North) next season.
