January 2005 (League Match)
‘Yatton kill off 2nd in the League’
Both sides started at a tremendous pace and continued open, hard-fought rugby throughout.
Sam Osborne converted his first penalty after five minutes only to see it equalised by John Pullin.
Thornbury’s pack piled on the pressure and a pushover try came from No 8 John Day in the twentieth minute.
Osborne kept Yatton in contention with his second penalty ten minutes later and from end to end play, he edged the home side gingerly in front with his hat trick penalty minutes before half time.
The second half was all Yatton after a tentative beginning, Thornbury did not collapse, far from it, but they had little answer to Yattons 15-man display against their second-in-the-league opponents.
Phil Morgan touched down on the wing at 50 minutes and shortly after Fullback Alan Walters broke through, having joined the line to receive Nick Garnham’s pass from the base of a five-yard scrum.
Then came the try of the match. Osborne, playing on the wing, picked up a difficult pass, ran for the line, evaded two tacklers, corrected his run and calmly touched down.
Despite Thornbury’s tough defence Yatton’s pack saw the opportunity to kill off their visitors and exact a full revenge for away defeat of 12-0 last October.
On 80 minutes Dave Keating broke through to touch down and flanker Chris Harris finished off Matt Miles winning of the ball in injury time.
This Saturday Yatton 1st XV
travel to Drybrook. The Coach leaves at 12.15 pm. An emphatic win will
certainly help Yattons near neighbours Nailsea Backwell with their League
relegation worries. Interesting stuff this local rugby!
