Yatton went off to a storming start last Sunday against Minehead in a leg of the Somerset Cup but nearly paid the penalty for easing up too quickly.
Within 2 minutes fullback Alan Walters had joined a backline move and grounded the ball after a very nervous start by Mineheads young side.
Minutes later the spectators Man of the Match wing Phil Morgan broke from his own 22, charged up the slope and changed angles to give Dave Keating an easy Try conversion.
At 15 minutes Minehead had chance to respond when an attempted clearance kick on the deceptive pitch gave the opposition winger a clear run to the tryline.
Five minutes later Keating’s Drop Goal glancing in off the upright retrieved some difference
At the whistle of halftime Tom Jackson’s try set the score at what looked like a comfortable 5-20 in favour of Yatton.
Within seconds of the turnaround Jackson was able to touchdown again having received the try-scoring pass from Ali Japp’s Houdini style break.
But at 45 minutes Minehead driving up hill struck back in earnest with a forwards try and urged on by the large home crowd 10 minutes later they repeated the dose.
Realising that the scores were getting dangerously close Yatton managed to contain the youthful enthusiasm of the home side.
But Minehead’s try with minutes left on the watch and putting them within 5 points of the travellers sent the home side supporters wild with excitement and the old heads available from the Yatton bench had to sweat it out.
This Saturday Yatton 1st XV has
a tough home League encounter against Cheltenham North.
