‘Quins dampen George’s parade’

Yatton ran out in front of the home crowd led by tighthead George Chalmers on his 21st Birthday but soon found themselves under pressure on the tryline

Apart from the occasional breakaway, Yatton were also lucky as Quins over kicked in attack.

Injury problems for Yatton were increased when Captain Matt Johnson had to leave at 20 minutes with a leg strain.

Yatton were first on the board at 30 minutes with a Dave Keating penalty but Ross Hickory soon levelled for Quins.

In first half injury time wing Scot Manning’s run in from the halfway line broke the stalemate and Hickory converted from far out.

Within 10 minutes of the turnaround the swift feet of Manning struck again and Hickory’s sure boot took the extra points.

With the score at 3-17 and 15 minute to go Yatton looked dead and buried but their game plan was gradually adapted and, anyway, it was George’s birthday! The renewed spirit gave space for young Dan Silcock to sprint on the wing and cross over.

A Quins player was eventually yellow carded for killing the ball but Yatton missed a vital penalty.

With 5 minutes of fulltime left Mike Harris’s weaving run and touchdown with Keating’s conversion put Yatton within 2 points of the visitors.

But Quins edge with a well-drilled pack clinched the day as a maul developed from a 5-yard scrum.

Hickory’s conversion came with visible relief to the travelling supporters.

This Saturday Yatton 1st XV are on further League duties away to ‘sunny’ Walcot
