Saturday 23rd
October (League Match)
Wet conditions and a strong crosswind spoilt any chance of constructive rugby for both sides.
Yatton kicked off with the slope in their favour and had territorial advantage throughout the first half
Both sides traded missed penalties in the opening minutes
Despite their superior pressure Yatton could not break Thornbury within their 22 as the opposition applied ‘old heads’ tactics and the only kickable penalty awarded flew wide. Thornbury’s habit of testing the offside limits was eventually penalised by having a player binned minutes before half-time
But seconds before that Simon Weavers speculative drop-goal during a rare excursion into Yattons half had broken the stalemate.
As pitch conditions deteriorated and Thornbury’s edge in the lineout continued, Weaver converted a penalty in the 55th minute. 5 minutes later another penalty from Weavers sure boot gave his side a measure of clear water in the scoreline
With 10 minutes to go battling Yattons chances were lost in the oppositions 22 as players began to make poor imitations of unskilled ice skaters. Within 5 minutes a player from each side was yellow carded and Weaver rounded of the slippery afternoon with another penalty, which maintained Thornbury’s unbeaten record for this season in the League.
